Guaranteed Interview Scheme

I've seen an NHS job that I'd like to apply for, and am considering applying under the guaranteed interview scheme but I'm not sure if it's right. I've had depression/anxiety and this has lead to a gap in my employment history.
I've been applying for lots of jobs but am not hearing back.. I'm worried though that if I do declare myself as disabled and say I have (or have had) a mental health issue this will put them off, or if I was able to get an interview would they expect me to go into detail about the problems I've had?

  • I could be wrong but I think you need to be in receipt of a disability benefit such as DLA.
  • Yes mental and physical issues can be considered a disability under the Equality Act as long as it's long term (12 months +) and the issue/impairment "has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on [your] ability to perform normal day-to-day activities". Depression could fall into this i.e. sometimes people can be so depressed they don't want to get up, get dressed etc... which is a normal day-to-day activity. You should get an Interview if you apply under the GIS as long as you meet the min criteria.

I ticked that box just the once. When I went for the interview I knew straight away that I wasn't going to get the job. I don't know why.. could have been age or over qualified or whatever but it has made me stop ticking that box because when I go for interview I want to know that I'm there because they really want to see me. I know the other way of thinking about is that once you get there you can wow them but I'm not really a stand out wow sort of person.
