In general graduate schemes are looking for future leaders and managers and they ask for a 2:1 or above because it is usually linked to consistent academic achievement which is the indicator they want as it is likely to produce the better, more hardworking managers.
Although it might seem like the only option, there are 1,000's of other graduate jobs out there that may not require a 2:1.

Have you looked on your university's own graduate vacancy site? If not, you should.

Wanting to apply for this Graduate scheme at Morrisons but it says you need 2:1, I have a 2:2 but meet all the skills required. Do I bother applying or not? Has anyone applied for a graduate scheme before and been accepted even if you don't meet the degree criteria?

For Employers, do you immediately dismiss these applications?

Why not give them a call and ask if you are wasting your time or not?

Intelligence and managing ability often seem to be inversely proportional - at least from my perspective. Someone with a 2:1 is probably a better potential manager, than someone with a first.
Wanted a job, now have one.
