Hi
I dont often post on here, but i frequent the site regularly. its a great source of information - well done everyone for keeping it going
OK, i just wanted a bit of advice or some peoples thoughts. I am currently a computer technician for a well known company. I earn a decent wage, i can pay my mortgage and comfortably afford to live. Im currently engaged and the big day is next year! For the most part my job is fantastic. I have always messed with computers and am always using one in one way or another, even at home! The issues I have with my job is that i find myself doing lots of work from home, i have worked this out and its quite a substantial sum of hours. The problem with this is that it dilutes my wage and the amount of free time i have. Its just manic at work and i find that i dont physically have enough time to do everything in my 8hr working day.
What i want to ask is, what other careers are there that i could do that i can do my 8hrs monday to friday, come home + not worry about work at all, and have my evenings and weekends free?
I Graduated from University in 2003, the only things i have is my degree and a-levels and my experience as a techie, since leaving uni. I earn 30K at the moment. im greatful for my job and feel that i am privileged to do it. Other than the extra time i put in i dont really have an issue. I like the variety of work i do. There are some things that are a bit teadious but then there are with any job i supose.
When i left uni i wanted to set up my own business, but every man and his dog is a computer technician! I think if i had my own business it woiuld have to be a new and fresh idea and not necessarily computer related to be a success, any ideas on that front are welcomed.
Thanks

People with jobs work eight hours a day, people with careers put in the hours necessary.
Given your thoughts on your current working life I would have thought that running your own business was a non starter.
(I'm not being unsympathetic; I think that a life outside work is very important but at your age you need to get more established before those kind of choices are viable.)0 -
Have to agree with Older - if you are happy on £30k and want to be on £30k in 20 years time then I am sure there are jobs out there for you. If you actually want to "progress" and earn more money then you are not going to do it working your contracted hours and thats it.
The higher you get the more responsibility you get and the more hours you will have to put in. You just need to work out what the "true" salary is when you consider the hours and commuting required but then look at the long term potential of the roll - an extra 50p/ hr really isnt worth taking a dead end job for in my opinion. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
