Not paying back mat leave

  • You can hardly say you didn't accept the new contract when you were more than happy to accept the enhanced maternity pay being paid to you for a few months. If you hadn't intended to accept the contract then surely you would have contacted the university to let them know you had been overpaid and to ask where your redundancy payment was?
Another option is for you to return to work for a few weeks until you are due to begin your next maternity leave, this time making it clear you will not be returning and only be paid SMP. At least this time someone who actually wants the job can have the position!
Oh and don't forget you have to let them know before the end of the 15th week before your due date!

  • I think it might be better if you disappear mildred1978,as all you seem to be doing is aim personal abuse at this young lady. I thought this forum was for helping people with advice.
  • My wife has a similar situation starting back after having a baby. The only difference is with her it is a family owned business, and basically the proprietors have changed all her terms and conditions at will increasing her workload and not paying a lot. The thing is some people like beepoes may be vulnerable to this so show some sympathy.

If money is tight, perhaps you could sell the fancy handbag ;)

I won the bag back in 2005, and sold it immediately on eBay to pay off some of my student loan, not that it is any of your business.

How about sticking to the op, or unless you have something useful to contribute keep your snyde remarks to yourself

It was a valid suggestion of how she could possibly find some of the money that she will have to pay back if she isn't going to return to work!!

Can you not use your accrued annual leave to link two maternity leaves together, giving you more maternity pay, plus an additional period of accrued leave. Even if you have to work a few more weeks to make up the 3 months required, pay plus £2k odd would more than pay for a few weeks childcare, surely?

I guess it depends on how far along in pregnancy no2 you are, but I would have thought that it would make financial sense to go back for a short period for SMP during the second mat leave if nothing else.

Whatever anyones opinion of your situation is the fact is the suggestion above is within the maternity regulations. I know a couple of woman in your situation who worked for a big airline . The had 2 pregnancies straight together and as they had to stop early due to flying regulations they did just this.

I was treated badly in a takeover situation whilst on maternity and was advised to go on sick leave till the situation was sorted went back for a short period and then got a payout. Yes it was total torture but at the time I had been harassed for 3 days post partum and so felt like you that I had been caused a lot of disruption to my maternity leave that was totally unwarranted and caused me genuine distress.
