Current Employer is lying to new employer
MeanParent
I have been offered a job with a new company.
The new company have gone to my current employer for a reference and have been told that I have never worked there! I have been there for 12 years!!!
New employer now thinks that I have lied and is withdrawing their offer!
Very very annoyed.
I will see my boss this PM and ask what they are playing at!!!

Ha, there are only 30 of us. Even if they got half the letters wrong they would know it's me!0 -
I'd guess it's just a misunderstanding. I wouldn't necessarily blame your present company just yet until you find out more. Maybe the company asking for the reference got mixed up with the names and asked for a reference on someone else?
I'd find it hard to believe that your present company could or would deny all knowledge of you, as you'd have pay slips etc to show you worked for them. Must be a mix up.0 -
Do you have your old contract of employment??0

Only got a letter of offer when I started outlining T&Cs of employment. I suppose that is the contract.0

Are you sure the letter got to the the right people?
I would write to the new company and enclose info from your current employer such as the last 3 years P60s etc; anything referring to your length of service there [pension payments etc]. And say that you think there must be some sort of mix up and could you assist them in getting to the bottom of it so that you do not lose this wonderful opportunity of working for them.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. Do you have like an employee number as well or payroll number you can supply? Pay slips?
Might need a bit more information before we can advise easily.0 -

I agree. There are plenty of ways to prove you worked somewhere.
However, that still doesn't get a reference and a firm is under no obligation to provide one or even answer any request.
What they cannot do is make a false statement which causes you a loss. If you are sure this is not accidental it may be you can use this to your advantage. It may be worth getting a solicitor to write to them threatening legal action then agree to drop the claim in exchange for an agreed reference as would happen in a compromise agreement.0 -
Meanparent you wouldnt by chance have rubbed people up the wrong way, seen similar happen a few times at various companies with axes to grind. Usual thing is to stress incompetancy whether right or wrong, its personal opinion.
In this present climate and i dont care how good anyone is, a jobs a job prove you have worked there pronto.0 -
Had a difficult conversation with the boss. He denied ever having received a reference request.
There was a temp in payroll a few weeks back so perhaps that's the culprit!?
He is unhappy that I am leaving but the new job pays much better.
He will call the company in the morning to try and sort things out.0
