New Mortgage for Ex Expats

We moved back to the UK June 2010 and having been refused mortgages from 3 companies and eventually managed to get one through an agent who - in effect had to pretend we had been living with the in-laws rather than abroad for 3 years in a European country.
Our credit rating was stated as 'A', we have run successful businesses in the UK and had a good track record never having missed a payment of any kind - but still no-one trusts us as we been out of the UK for 3 years (although maintained UK bank accounts and credit cards) so credit is difficult to get. A horrible scary thing and totally unexpected. In fact our current mortgage provider refused an additional small amount on the mortgage a year ago for home improvements. I was gobsmacked!
The mortgage (which is a small 20% of the house value) is up for renewal soon as we will have been back for 2 years and I am worried about going though the whole refusal scenario again. I also have no idea what previous address to use as we had lived at 4 addresses within 3 years prior to moving back to the UK. So has anyone any idea who to approach or have experience of this and been successful? We have a good proven income but that still didn't prevent the refusals.
Thanks!
