My tiles around the shower seem to have lost their shine. I clean weekly just using a normal bathroom cleaning spray. Does anybody know how i can make them shine again?

Thank You

  • There are two reasons that I can think of that could cause this:

One: that there is a build-up of residue of some sort which needs to be removed. Give everything a good going-over after cleaning with neat vinegar without rinsing and see if it makes any difference. That should remove any lime-scale making things dull but if there's lots you might need to do it a couple of times.

Two; abrasives that have scratched the glaze. I can't think of anything that can be done which will improve matters save re-tiling.
  • This is a very old wartime trick, just do a few tiles at a time

Make up a paste using equal parts water, bicarbonate of soda and salt
Rub this paste onto the tiles with a sponge, rinse out the sponge and remove the paste from the tiles with lots of fresh water.
Finally, dip a clean sponge into neat lemon juice and wipe all over the tiles to remove any residue, this should leave your tiles sparkling.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • I'm not sure whether this is old school or not but I use a steamer and an ecloth.

Everyone comments on how they shine and they are nearly 20yrs old and due to being in an Army house hardly well cared for.

In fact ecloths have saved me a fortune as I no longer buy loads of different cleaning products and have saved a fortune.
Can I ever learn this budgeting lark? So far it's not looking promising

I used limescale remover - viakal and the tiles came out sparking. Think it must have been the hard water etc.

Showershine spray which is great for the bathroom, also works well on grease splashed tiles around the hob in the kitchen too.
  • I aways use diluted Stardrops on my tiles - I use this to clean most things - and they are super shiny.

  • Jif lemonjuice and stardrops mixed or vinegar and stardrops mixed, spray scrubb over with brush/scourer old shower scruchy. also white stardrops applied neat with scourer then rinsed brings back the shine.
