Married couple retirement age

Hi all,
I just want to check a basic point.

My wife is 10yrs older than me. Will she get her state pension when she reaches retirement age (what ever that may be) even though I am still working?

This obviously effects any plans I might have for retiring early.

Thanks
Rob

I believe it depends on whether she qualifies for SRP in her own right i.e. from her own contributions, or from yours. If the latter i think she has to wait until you reach 65. I could be wrong, though.

asssuming she qualifies for the state pension then yes she can claim it as soon as she reaches pension age without regard to your age

How many years NI contributions does your wife have?

Basically when your wife reaches her state pension age she will receive a pension based on her NI contributions. I suggest you get a state pension forecast for both of you. This can be done online.

If your wife does not have enough NI contributions of her own, she can claim from your contributions but only when you reach state retirement age.
  • Margaretclare is right.

Why not get a state pension forecast so you will both know where you stand? This link tells you how to get one.

Or she can pay for additional years
  • She has 30+ yrs of her own NI so that confirms it for me, she can claim her SP in her own right rather than wait for me to retire and make a claim based on my NI contributions

    Thanks all for feedback
