Hi All,
I have to do my partners tax return soon! He is a self employed tradesman and is new to this tax lark having always been PAYE before.
I have read the HMRC guidance and I am none the wiser. Can anyone recommed any software or websites that will help me make sense of the allowances he can claim?
Thanks
Karen

you might want to post up details about your OH
when did he start SE
what sort of trade
does he work from home etc0 -
Given that you have left it extremely late, with only 2 weeks to go, and you seem to have no clue about what to do, I would suggest that you seriously consider paying a professional for advice.0

Thanks guys. I do my one tax return so I am not totally clueless. I dont have to worry about the same allowances as him though.
He is a self employed electrician with a van he bought and uses only for work and he has an office at home.

A personal return is not going to be the same as a trader return- you have capital issues to worry about as well. It may well be worth paying out for an accountant for the first year to give you the basis for future years.
As you are so tight on time I assume you already have a log in password for your OH as they can take ages to come through.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. One option is to have a go yourself, maybe find an accountant who is then willing to review it for you - which is a lower fee than a full set of accounts but at the same time does not provide the same level of cover for you in the event of an error having been made. You're welcome to call me for free advice, I have 3 client returns left to file out of a total of 160-odd unlike many accountants I don't leave this stuff until the last minute and have trained my clients in the same vein.
The three I have left have minor issues to resolve. All 3 know that I will submit whatever we have on 21 January. If they manage to get together the missing bits of info. at a later date we will then re-submit. This could well be a sensible strategy for you. The urgent target is by 31 Jan to have a tick in the box marked "Tax return filed" and hence no £100 fine. I suspect this year there will be many more SA re-submissions than in previous tax years.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0
