Hi all,
Well I stockpiled a bit of milk & bread for the winter snow that never came, so now I'm using it up to defrost the freezer.
I successfully defrosted a 'bag' of milk the other day and decanted that into the milk bottle, but having taken out a 4 pint bottle yesterday, I poured it on my cereal this morning to find that it came out, not lumpy, just watery with milky looking flakes. It smells ok, but after putting sour milk on my cereal several years ago I couldn't bring myself to eat it. It was defrosted overnight in a cool kitchen. The bottle is still in the fridge - is it ok to use? How do you defrost milk?

Usually in the fridge, in a bowl, because the outside of the plastic bottle gets a bit wet. I must say I've never had a problem, but perhaps semi-skimmed (which I use) freezes better? Perhaps whole milk separates after freezing?Life is mainly froth and bubble

If it doesn't smell sour it's probably not fully defrosted yet. Have you tried giving it a vigorous shake?
I defrost milk in a bucket of cold water if I need it sooonish, otherwise jsut in the fridge if I'm planning ahead.0 -
Ok, thanks - it is semi-skimmed milk. I thought it might take too long in the fridge so left it in the sink drainer overnight but it wasn't a warm kitchen. I've tried shaking it but still 'flakes' left sticking to the inside of the top of the bottle but still doesn't smell off. Will try it in a cup of tea a bit later.

its either not a defrosted yet, or just needs to be shaken up. I just leave mine out on the draining board for about 24 hours, never had any go off or poison me yet!0

It is the thirteenth of January, there is plenty of winter to go yet :shhh:0 -
Fwiw my skimmed milk from the freezer has done this today. I always buy skimmed, but I notice so e defrost better than others. It is really off putting I agree.0

But we never get the snow as bad as if it's before Christmas - it won't last long this time of year - not with the daffodills & primroses out in the garden! I still have some milk & bread left frozen - just not three weeks worth as my daughter was newborn before Christmas. I wouldn't be so unhappy to venture out & walk to the nearest shop now she's a tad older.0 -
It just needs a little longer to defrost properly.
Once it's defrosted, give it a good shake to remix it properly and it'll be good as new.0
