MSE News: Chancellor: child benefit cut will go ahead

Anyone that thinks that the current period of austerity is temporary is delusional. Sooner or later the government will have to increase direct taxation. The only difference is that this government will do it not as a last resort, but only after maximisating indirect taxation, they have privatised/destroyed the public sector and attacked the all government expenditure. We are only at the beginning of a what some expect to be an age of austerity.0

This is a very good and logical idea. So good in fact that this Goverment would never come up with it in a month of sundays.
Reply to; Why cant they wait till you have your children in school to stop it ! My hubby is on £43k but I only earn about £2k as onlywork one day a weekend don't mind my child benefit stopping in 3 yrs as I will be able to work a lot more hours !0 -
Nobody on £40,000+ a yr needs a hand out, they need to learn how to budget instead, greedy sods.
They will always manage to talk themselves into a reason why they deserve this benefit !0 -
WRONG WRONG WRONG
Why cant the government see that larger income doesn't equal larger assets/disposable income
Tax Tax Tax Tax
we pay approx a month
£800 tax and ni
£70 vat on petrol
£20 vat on fuel bill
£80 vat on food
£10 vat on clothing
£25 road tax
£145 council tax
£1150
im sure there are more i haven't listed. plus my hubby's £260 a month pension paid to the government, witch in sure will be nothing by the time we get there homeless and penny less. my point being we would be better off both being unemployed (ive done the maths)due to us renting, not having to pay out on petrol/car ect and having a disabled child. the government would loss out on the tax we pay. in fact would be paying us far more in housing benefit, counsel tax benefit , income support ect ect. at the mo including child benefit and the disabled payment we get we are still paying in more than we are taking out.
if we were on benefits we would be costing £30,000 a year to the tax payer. if we continue to be squeezed we may have to jump ship and join the dole line.
My husband and I have a income just over the cliff edge so will lose our child benefit. I am unable to work as I home school my autistic daughter (there is no primary provision in my area, would you believe we live in the south near London not some back of beyond village in the country!!!!!!!!).
we do how ever claim dla and carers allowance but this is nowhere near what i could earn if my child was at school.
my husband works for a local authority a long way away and we have been stung buy the fuel increases paying over £350 a mouth in petrol, we have consided moving closer but the rent increase is more than the petrol . we pay £1000 a month in rent. heating is really expensive as im home, home schooling all-day. and at the moment we are just about getting by. nothing left at the end of the month. we do however have the problem the car is about to die. no car= no job. The crazy thing is we would be better off if neither of us worked. we have seriously coincided this, although we both have strong socialist views.
my point is my friend owns a house, and CHOOSES to live on a low income, as to increase leisure time because with little out goings mainly housing. the government are willing to pay for council tax, working tax,dla and many others totalling approx £2000 a month so what is the point in them working full time and paying tax?
WHY ARE WE WORKING?
cant afford a house
cant afford to fix the car
cant afford to save for the children's future
When they take away the child benefit i really don't know what we will do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek:0 -
you will manage, other have and do!0

They will always manage to talk themselves into a reason why they deserve this benefit !
£40K a year gross income ends up as far less in real terms than a workless couple couple with just 3 children will be claiming in benefits.
Tell me why the families living totally on money provided by the taxpayer should enjoy an equal or better standard of living than someone working?
ETA: A £40K salary will produce a net income of £2500 a month to pay everything out of including travel costs to get to work etc.
A family of 2 parents with 3 children and a rent of £200 a week will enjoy an income of £2300 a month and they don't even have to set foot out of the door. Plus they will receive free school meals, free prescriptions, help with dental and optical costs. Now tell me who are the greedy sods? Absolutely stupid state of affairs.0 -

Your assumption is that because an individual is on £40k plus then they are loaded....utter nonsense! The only way I could afford to have any more children would be to lose my job!
I have no issue with benefits being removed from those who do not deserve them but am I less deserving of this benefit than someone who has numerous children and has no intention of ever working? We are all in it together *

As a family with two children at school and working just over the 40% tax bracket, we are going to be hit by the withdrawal of the child benefit, + commuting costs have also risen, we have not had a pay rise for 2 years or a bonus, there is no extra cash flow to use for holidays, replacing old broken cars etc. All we are trying to do is earn an honest living and bringing our children up with correct morals and beliefs - being SKINT is a very difficult one to explain to them. We don't have uptodate technology and certainly don't have SKY, perhaps we should quit work and let the government look after us properly, instead of stabbing us in the back.0

Just to add fuel to the fire,
I am a single mum, earning below the stated figure, but i work full time, and I work very hard to support me and ds, we have our own house we are paying for receive NO other benefit at all, and only receive £20 per month in maintenance from DS dad. I already pay my childcare before tax.
So if I have a good year and progress in my chosen career as expected, I will infact be worse off by nearly £1000 a year, so I might as well give up now trying for any promotion or improving my salary until it reaches a possible of 46K pa.
The government is happy to penalised single parent families. The system would work if it were calculated on household income, i.e. if the combined household income is £60k plus then no CB.
However, I do have to say that I am not entriely sure why having a child entitles anyone to benefit, and if it was removed completely it might reduce the number of people sitting at home 'having children' for a living.Jan 13/15 Feb 16/15 March 19/20 April 17/15:D May 0/17

Exactly! They have set the threshold too low and not based on Households combined income. Child benefit was given to ensure the main carer had a guaranteed sum in their name. Whilst most families are caring and sharing this WILL hit the stay at home parent with a mean partner.Truth always poses doubts & questions.
