Electoral Roll Registration

I recently moved, and have had to register myself on the Electoral Roll at my current address.

I was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to become registered on there?

It states on my credit file that not being registered at my current address is a negative thing to lenders etc.

I'm told that Councils send updated info to the CRAs on a monthly basis, so it could take up to a month or so depending on timing.

  • As a side note, isn't it interesting how registering to vote somehow becomes linked to being eligible for credit?

What I heard is that they only update their electoral roel list each year, which is normally in December. So say we apply today for a vote and listed on electoral role, it will only appear on December 2012. This is the information that I heard from them.

About monhly updating info to the CRAs I do not know about this ....., the person who know well about this please provide your comments as i might have misunderstood what they mean.

The annual canvass is done from August and takes until December for the info to update from that.

At all other times of the year, anyone added is updated with the CRAs on a monthly basis.

If your name's been added to your council's rolling register it should take around 4-6 weeks for the information to reach your credit report. Being registered to vote helps lenders check your name, address and periods of residency, and it's fed into credit risk and fraud analysis. In terms of credit risk, people who are registered to vote, especially when they've been voting at the same address for several years, are statistically less likely to default on their credit.
