Soapy955, did you know you can freeze bananas and they are better for cakes after it? They go all sweet and sloppy and actually taste better when mached and baked in a cake than yellow ones.
I now buy bags of cheap 'going over' bananas and chuck em in the freezer, then just defrost a couple in the microwave (or at room temp - they only take an hour or so) as I need them. They look repulsive but the results are sublime!
I make a chocolate banana cake which calls for 2 or 3 mashed bananas and my lot can't get enough.
I once bought 3 kilos for 20p at a market!Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
I cleared the fridge out a couple of days ago and found a huge piece of brie I had bought to eat over Chrsitmas. I opened it to see what state it was in and found a wrapper full of yellow slime - urgh!Oh dear, here we go again.0

Somebody mentioned jam and marmalade going mouldy, I used to have this problem until I started keeping the jars in the fridge. They last much longer without the mould problems.
With lemons, we slice and freeze them on a plastic chopping board before bunging them in a plastic bag. Great for adding straight into a G&T.
Garlic, used to throw away loads but now we have that lazy garlic in jars. It says use within (I think) a month, we keep ours in the fridge and it seems to keep fine for ages. We keep going til it's finished....4-6 months!
Can anybody advise whether cooked turkey from Christmas which has been frozen will still be OK to use?Make £2025 in 2025

Shortie wrote:Oh my... I'm not usually this bad but today I threw awat a HUGE bowl of veg soup from the fridge (2nd time I've made the stuff and 2bd time I've thrown it before eating any... I think I'll give up on making soup for now).
Blimey I've never done that. If I've gone to the trouble of making soup, I plough through it relentlessly, rather than waste it! You do know you can freeze it of course? Then there was the spare prtion of homemade berry fruits crubmle and custard.
Oh yum yum, wasting that sounds like sacrilege  .Oh, and I discovered 6-8 pears and a couple of satusmas under a pile of odd socks that are definately past their best... eugh!
Confession over ...... for now ....
Lol, now do you mean the fruit or the socks are past their best?
Thanks for all the replies so far, they are very enlightening and make me feel loads better!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

WE have dog, a hamster and a compost bin that account for most of the waste that the human dustbins in our house dont hoover up.
I also try very hard not to buy stuff that is not on the authorised list otherwise, I have to make another list, and then I get confused as to which list is the right one!

normal week a little left over ham (sarny type )goes to daisy our cat:o
fruit left over from luch during the week chop it all up add carnation style milk ( asda smart price ) sunday tea pudding .
It bread in our house that gets wasted no one likes crusts plus the odd slice left over screams out for bread and butter pudding - but i just dont0 -
Luckily the dog accounts for most things. Bananas were a problem as noone eats the even slightly black ones and also noone likes any cake thats banana flavoured. So now I freeze the odds one for chutney and I also buy fewer oftener“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Lol, actually that was my second thought after ... *darned*, what a waste of fruit. I did resort to the sniff teat of the socks but luckily they weren't touching the fruit so they were okay. Phew!April 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -
