Employer is not Sending me to occupational health advisor

I face some health challenges and for long time I have been asking my employer to send me to occupational health advisor but so far they have fail.

I known they use the company called Medigold can I ask my GP or I myself can make self referral.

When I was talking to Medigold I got the impression they only see you if the Employer request and not even on GP referral.

Of-course I will pay for my own cost.

Many Thanks

  • I would ask your GP to write to your employer - they may listen. Depending on what the health challenges that you face are, the alternative may be for your GP to sign you off sick although this can cause other employer issues (sickness policies and the like), and it may be of course that you are ok to work and just need support from Occupational Health.

A referral to your employers occupational health service is not a right - OH is a service paid for and provided by the employer and they do not have to refer anyone if they do not wish to.

Obviously it is very difficult for anyone to comment on individual circumstances with no details, but the reason that you are asking to see OH and the "health challanges" that you say you face are very relevant to whether an employer would refer, or why they may choose not to. I mention this because you appear to have been looking for reasons to take your employer to a tribunal for over a year now, so there is obviously a back story here that you haven't mentioned on this thread, and the context in which something happens is always relevant.

What is it you want oc health to do ? Is there something in particular you are hoping for ? how would you manage if your company did not have an oc health ?
Can't your Dr deal with your issues ?

It would be much easier to offer proper advice if we knew what was really going on here.

Some GPs have additional qualifications in occupational medicine or you could ask your GP to refer you to a consultant occupational health physician. He or she could write a report which you could present to your employers but this is likely to cost you several hundred pounds.

Quite where this gets you is less obvious without far more details about your situation. It would be a stupid employer who ignored relevant information presented to them in this way but remember they only have to make REASONABLE adjustments if your medical issues amount to a disability in the legal sense of the word. Obviously they have to comply with health and safety regulations but again this is speculation without knowing what is going on.
