Stuck with a Default they 'wont let' me pay

Hi,
I have a default on my credit report from T-Mobile which has been there without my knowledge for about two years. It's certainly my own fault, I changed address, thought I notified T-Mobile and then a few months later neglected to pay the last months line rental on a line I didn't use (hence the forgetfulness) However I never received any correspondence from them (I now know because they had the wrong address) I continued to forget about it until getting turned down for credit recently.
Up to this point, I accept responsibility and have been trying to sort this out. They claim I owe them £250 including the line rental and various none-payment/"early disconnection" fees, which I'm happy to pay, but that's where the problems start.
I contacted T-Mobile to pay my bill, they said they'd sold it to a debt collection agency called Capquest. I contacted them, and they assured me it was T-Mobile I owed the money to. This went back and forth another two or so times until I wrote a letter to Capquest describing the whole thing. They wrote back to me with again saying it had been sent back to T-Mobile. Now I had some written proof, I sent the letter (and not a photocopy, idiot) to T-Mobile.... to which no reply. I've written again, I've phoned, no one can help.
I've heard that it's somehow illegal to prevent someone paying off a debt, is this true? I've been trying to give someone my money for about 8 months now and no one seems to want it, just like I don't want this default on my back!!!
Can anyone help? Is there any action I can take against T-Mobile for not letting me pay?
Thanks in advance

The bad news is your stuck with the default whether you pay or not! It will stay on your credit file until 6 years after the default date. Have you checked your credit files to see if it definately was T-mobile that issued the default?0
