    What was the period it was earned over? Did you do it as SE, or was it through Uni.

    NI goes weekly or monthly if employed (no idea about if SE) , so it is possible to have to pay NI even on £368.

    Surely they said what the £50 was for?

    Ask for a pension forecast. That should show years in which your record is deficient. You cannot know what the future holds, so pay what is necessary to ensure a 100% record. Ask for a receipt and keep both it, and the forecast, forever.
