Tax Rebate

Hi, Does anyone know anything about being entitled to a tax refund or rebate before leaving the UK to go on a working visa?
I'm off to Australia soon and I've been told I can get a tax refund before I go which could mean 50% of what tax I've paid since the beginning of this tax year.
Also, trying to work out if I would be entitled to the largest amount I could get if I apply for it before the end of this tax year - April 5th
Help much needed!
Thanks

You may well be entitled to a tax refund but it doesn't work on a % basis, not sure who's been telling you that but they were a bit confused.
You can get a refund if you have paid too much tax - when you are on PAYE your tax is worked out assuming you'll be working for 12 months in the year, so the personal allowance (the tax free bit) is spread equally with 1/12th of your annual allowance per month. If you don't actually work the whole 12 months, then you will have paid slightly too much tax, and can get this refunded by completing the HMRCs form P50.
You only get back the exact amount of overpayment so there's no advantages/disadvantages to stopping work at different times. If you are off soon and you are working, you won't be getting a huge amount back as it's only a couple of months to the tax year, but of course every little helps...Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
