Naked Wines

Read an article this morning regarding companies offering discount vouchers before Xmas and then customers unknowingly there after being charged monthly on their Credit Cards. In the small print words to the effect 'use the voucher and we will enter you into our Naked Angel savings club of £20 per month. This will be deducted from your card'.

Just checked my credit card and low and behold £20 deducted yesterday.

Planning my response to Naked Wines as this is very misleading and improper. Any one else any experiences with this company?

Many thanks

  • I also ordered wine from this company over Christmas and thus far, haven't had any further money deducted from my account. I do recall at the time of ordering, you clicked on something if you wanted to join the savings club, so could it be possible you clicked on that in error?
  • I've used them before Xmas.

Used a voucher that I got in a Bizarre Magazine.
No further payments have been taken from me.

When I ordered there was a thing where they said " Do you want your cash back now?" Supposedly offering to give you the same amount as your order back into your account as credit.

If you clicked that you were interested it would sign you up for an account at £20 per month. If you said no thanks then it didn't.

Company have been fine for me. HOpe the information has helped though. If you created an account - log on and see if you can get any further information from them.

    Many thanks....
  • I've used Naked Wines a few times and to be honest I thought it was really obvious. You have to opt into it, not out of it, so it's not like they're being sneaky. Each time I've paid it says something like "do you want to claim a voucher?" and you can have look at the details and it said if you signed up to an Angels membership at £20 a month they would give you a voucher for £40 off a case worth at least £79.99, and you would get a discount on future purchases. I don't buy enough wine, so I said no and carried on paying. I don't know if it appears differently for different people, but it was really clear to me. If you buy enough wine, the Angels membership is actually quite good - I know a few people who've clubbed together and all buy their wine through one account with the Angel discount, and they do seem to get a good saving on what they buy.
  • Actually, if anyone's been paying into it without realising and doesn't desperately miss the money, I'd just cancel the payment, leave the already money in your account and use it to fund future presents, parties etc. At least then you know you've got an emergency wine fund... hic!

I got a coupon and spent it online - I joined the £20 a month club to see what value they would give in the longer term. Seemed pretty clear to me what I was signing up for. I think you can ask for your money back if you made a mistake.

So far everything has been genuine and good value if you are part of the club. Non-club prices seem a little high, but service has been excellent.

    good luck
  • I got "tricked" by them a couple of years ago. I haven't seen their most recent literature, but the concept couldn't have changed much:

They send you wine that is not even good to make vinegar out of it, while sneakily charging you for a "membership".

I complained to them and got my money back. I think it was about £15 back then. They tried to give me this sentimental story about being an angel for all these independent producers around the world. That's a load of bull. They just buy sub standard production in bulk and charge your card through the back door.
  • Just to add to the above, the first time I ordered I didn't become an "angel" although I used the £40 voucher from this site - they give you an option to "get your money back" and to be honest I don't think most people would think that this was without it's "catch" which it isn't but if you read the terms before signing up (which I did) it's explained very cleary - they are pretty transparent as far as I'm concerned. They do also state that if you don't want to be an angel anymore you can cancel and have your money back at any time. On my second order I did sign up to £20 a month because the wines were good and the cashback incentive was good.

HOWEVER, they have recently changed this and you now allegedly get the wines at a 25% discount rather than getting cashback - I have recently received my lastest order and although the wines are the same ones I have ordered before neither me nor my DH think they are anything like as nice as the ones we had before. I have sent them an email to this effect as they pledge to send you replacements if you dont like the wine. Has anyone else had wine recently from them and not been happy with it?
