Stopping self-employment with no earnings

Hi,

I registered as self-employed in the summer with the intention of getting some freelance work. I was then, fortunately, employed full-time at my current job.

I just rang the national insurance self-employed helpline (0845 915 4655) which I got from here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/factsheet/stop-trading.pdf
and the guy said that he'd deleted me from there for NI purposes but I needed to call the Tax Office and inform them. So I rang and after, I'm not kidding, 25 minutes I gave up trying to get through.

So basically I don't actually know what I'm meant to do, as there was no incoming or outgoings for the self-employment. Shall I just fill out an online tax return and just say that? Do I still need to tell someone that I am no longer self employed and if so, can I do it in a slightly less expensive way than phoning their one employee?

I got a bill for for NI and someone on here said I could fill in a form and declare that I wasn't earning and so not paying, but that seems to be causing a bit of confusion from others here

I just wanted to be prepared for paying the right amount of tax for freelance work. I wish I'd just decided on doing it cash in hand.

  • Sorry, just to clarify because I'm getting conflicting advice here.

    I just phoned the deferment helpline because it said if I was earning more than the threshold with my job and my self employment. He says that if I've told the self-employment office that I'm no longer self-employed then I don't have to pay the NI but to send in the CF10 form anyway just in case.

    He also said that I should tell the tax office.

    I'm completely confused about who to tell now, but I'll call the tax office in Bristol and see what they say.. Sorry, I'm not an idiot, but the information is so completely all over the place.

    On the tax side. Have you had a paper SA Return to fill in or a Notice to File (an SA Return)? If either - then you have to file a return for the appropriate period. And mark the fact the self employment is ceased.
    If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
