The TV programme with Heston Blumenthal trying to change their business model said it all

Old fashioned business run by old fashioned people, the UK has moved on, they haven’t

Maybe it was trying to go upmarket that caused the problem.

20 years ago they were OK.

But they no longer have the option of operating 20 years ago - something had to give.

i think the problem was they chose to ignore him, and stuck to their menus from 20 years ago

Whenever I have been in one the staff are usually very pleasant. They've just refurbished the one near us and made it all funky looking. Some of them have really seen better days, and unfortunately its pretty clear that as a business they are skint.

The main problem with them is that the food is so expensive. It isn't bad, but just far too expensive in comparison to local restaurants and pubs, so they get no local trade only people on long journeys.

It's clear that the bottom has fallen out of the market for crappy, overpriced food, often served cold by uninterested youths in shabby surroundings.......

    no mcdonalds is still open

... so they get no local trade only people on long journeys.
This might be part of the issue too ... with modern cars being so much smoother and more comfortable, with more gadgets, than 20 years ago, people are more prepared to make their journeys in one hit ... whereas 20 years ago people were more likely to take a break.

I never stop unless a journey is over 400 miles.

It's worth driving a couple of miles off the motorway to get some decent food at reasonable prices.

Beware of DVT. It's not always aircraft journeys that cause it.
