ARRRRRRGH
They just sent me a book I did not ask for and billed me for the pleasure!!
I've just emailed them... and also looking for the number to call at present!
Anybody had experience with Readers digest? AND... has anyone ever EVER won anything in their stupid 'prize draws' ?

I did hear the story once of someone who under similiar circumstances wrote back along the lines of:
"Thank you for sending your book for storage in my library. The cost of this service will be £10/month, payable up front a year in advance. Please find enclosed an invoice for £120.
If at any time you wish to retrieve the book, simply send a stamped self addressed envelope and the book will be returned within 14 working days"
I think they never heard from them again.0 -
This might come under the unsolicited goods catagory. You can ask them to collected the un-order item or send you the means to do it and if they dont within a time period you can keep it. I cant remember the time frame but it could be 6 months.
Sorry this is a bit vague.
Regarding winning anything, you don't seem to make it through to the next round if you dont buy a book in each round. This is from memory of over 10 years though.0 -
The last time RD did this to me I parcelled the book up and put it in the post box with a very stiff letter.
Never heard a scribe from them since - must be 10 years ago!
The worst thing they ever did to me was I took out a gift subscription for myself as if my Mother had bought me it - to get the free gift.
When the 12 month subscription was up they rebilled my Mother for the continuing "gift" subscription!0 -

I think Readers Digest are a real pain - they seem to target old, vulnerable people with their ridiculous prize draws! My mum has dementia, and I ended up paying for loads of books she did not even know she had (in the bath, in the garden shed, all unopened). She was convinced she had won them, bless her - though she didn't want them!
Fair enough, she hadn't contacted them, or sent them back, I thought, and paid up. But when I contacted them and explained the situation they STILL kept sending them. I was very cross on the phone at least twice, and finally wrote to them stating all the unsolicited goods stuff. I never heard from them again, so they certainly did not want to take up my offer to return them at their expense! Mum now lives in a residential home, and the books went to the charity shop.0 -
My grandma used to have a Reader's Digest subscription. When she died, it was cancelled. About 5 years later, we started receiving copies of Reader's Digest adressed to her. We just assumed they were free samples and chucked them in the bin. Then they tried to bill her!
I phoned them and explained that she would not be paying the bill as she was dead. They wrote it off, said they had no idea why her subscription had started again and graciously said we could keep the magazines they had already sent - how nice of them. I think basically they are just chancers trying to get money out of vulnerable people.0 -

Great story!Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.0 -
