I was a HR manager in a government department for 14 years and always used to look at new recruits 'salaries on P45's ...
Nosey, but what you'd expect someone to do.

The Earnings on P45 do not directly correlate with Salary.
I think there are many reasons why there might a big difference.

Dont Worry My Dear As The Wages Dept Would Not Want To Know How Much You Had Got Before Not To Worry In The Slightest Bit The Wages Dept Do Not Care Less In How Much You Have Been Offered By Your New Employer Take Care Arthur
  • I wouldn't worry, either.

If they DID check up your p45 (which is really unlikely in a firm of any size) and ask you about it, you can say 'I WAS on £16k, then they reduced it as I was a trainee - they were just about to put it up again which is why I said £16k. They were disappointed I was leaving, but I wanted to come here so I left even though they were beginning to negotiate with me about a higher salary'. :D

I'd worry about how you're going to do the new job. Your wages were cut because you weren't up to the mustard. Have you prepared yourself to pick up this new job and hit the ground running, or are you going to find yourself out of a job sooner or later? That would not be good.

You'd best give it some serious thought.
