statute barred debts

i have debts that are statute barred - i have been out of the uk for 6.5 years. If I return to the UK and try to open a bank account what are the chances of the debts showing up on my file. If they show up (incorrectly) how can I get them removed from my file so that I can open a basic bank account.
Thanks

If the debts were defaulted within 6 months of the last time you paid, as they should really have been, then they will no longer appear on your credit files or will not be on there much longer.
Regardless of that, you can obtain a basic bank account even with those on your report. That is the point of basic accounts. Even someone with a bad recorded credit history should be able to get one.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Are you certain the debts are statute barred? Have you checked to see if any creditor obtained CCJs against you. If they did then your debts would not be SB and the CCJs would likely still be showing on your credit file.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0

My wife and I have experienced difficulty in getting credit for the last few years.
This would be better in a separate thread. I'll move the post.

I don´t know for sure if they are statute barred because I cannot get an experian report due to having no uk address for past 6 years and no credit card....banging head against wall springs to mind lol0

You can see if any creditor took out a CCJ against you by searching the registery trust (online website of judgements), its £8 per address but will allow you to check for CCJs in the last 6years.
If you stopped payng 6.5years ago then its very unlikely a CCJ would be more than 6years old. And if you certainly stoppy 6.5years ago then as long as there is no CCJ then they should be SB.
Of course it is still possible they could appear on your credit file if a creditor issued a late default, but as fermi said that wouldn't stop you getting a basic bank account.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
