Laundry allowance

Ok I found out the other week if you wear a uniform (and yes it has a company logo) you can claim an allowance of £45 a year if you have to clean it yourself. I checked to make sure the company I work for did'nt include it in my wage's.

I sent a basic letter off to my local tax office telling them about the uniform and having to launder it myself.

I was wondering how long the tax office take's to send out any payments they owe?

If anyone find's the origional thread with the template letter on could you post it please.

I did the above. They took 3 months to reply to my letter saying that they are writing to my employer to confirm!!! My boss had a letter to fill out. I have got an ear bashing for creating more work for my boss.

If your tax code was changed during the year to give extra allowances, then usually you would pay a little less tax each payday. If the allowance is £45 then presuming you are a basic rate tax payer, it works out to £9.90 a year in hard cash.

Any cheque refund would be for earlier tax years.
Did you advise HMRC how long you had worked for company and for how long you had had logo'd workwear that you had to home launder and wanted to claim the allowance for.

  • I also gave this a go - took around two months to sort out but eventually they wrote to my employer and then sent me a letter saying my tax code had been changed to include the £45 per year - i claimed for 3 years but didn't see any refund.
  • I get a laundry allowance of £65 not £45, different professions have different rates
