Cheques from Inland Revenue.

If H.M.Revenue and Customs discovered you were due to a tax refund, would they know where to send the cheque?
We talked about this at work and most people thought the employer tells the tax office when folk move house. But they don't. It's up to each one of us to keep the the tax man up to date ourselves. I don't know how much money is sat in the national coffers just waiting to be claimed but it must be £100,000's.

Also - know your code number and check that your boss is using the right one. If he isn't, get the tax people to sort it out and put it right.

You do need to keep HMRC up-to-date with your address, however they do take any updates from P45s/P46s/etc that are filed by your employer.

HMRC will always accept the reason "we didn't receive the tax return" as grounds of appeal against the late return penalty (but not always interest and surcharges), because the appeal commissioners have in the past always accepted it as a reasonable excuse. However, it's an excuse you can only use once! They would expect you to keep them up-to-date with any change of address in future.

It's best to contact Revenue & Customs directly rather than rely on your employer. I know from experience that many employers leave address details blank when sending in P45s, P46s etc either because they can't be bothered or don't realise the implications. This is becoming more frequent with the advent of electronic posting of employee details, as P45s etc are often sent in with no postcode/town/house number and this is not picked up by a computer reading the information as it would be with a human operator.

ginger_nuts, if you send it in writing to your local tax office they should be able to update it for you as all offices use the same taxpayer database as far as I know, but bear in mind it could take a week or so for them to do this depending on the state of their post on hand.

The one that deals with your affairs. Pointless writing to just any office without quoting the reference number by which HMRC know you. And you can readily find that by looking at a coding notice (P2) / SA return or whatever. Put in the bit of effort to find the reference number - and you'll find the right office / address at the same time? Or ask the people who pay you (assuming PAYE) .. they have the details.

  • We moved 3 times in 5 years, 5 years later got a knock on the door by an inland rev officer debt collecter telling us we owed them.....£23,000!!!!
    Took me by suprise
Blagged her (luckily as im a female) and didnt think it would have been the same attitude with a male
Anyway, spoke to our accountant the next day and basically there had been a big f*** up on their behalf simply because they didnt have details of our change of address...basically hubby went from being csa employed to fully self employed big confusion and all down to us not keeping the tax office informed of our every movement minute by minute  ..which we didnt know we had to do as tax returns were just sent with our new adresses
Very confusing really...but a very easy mistake
Bottom line was sorted out very easily, im a very laid back person, i knew we didnt owe the money, i knew theyd c***** up and i was confident when speaking to them on the doorstep without being ars*y
Soon enough the letters came through with the rebate that never was as obviously we hadnt paid it...basically just paperwork cancelling the debt
A lot of work which simply could have been avoided due to us KNOWING we had to keep the tax office notified of every little breath we took!
