Hey everyone, I'm looking to learn a trade skill in 2012 to start a career im sick of working unskilled warehouse jobs all the time for little money. Does anyone know trade skills shortages there are this year? and what would be the best way to go about learning them, i don't think i could get a grant because im working atm, if anyone has any knowledge on this id love to hear it. I'm thinking maybe building/plastering etc but open to all ideas!
Thanks for any info, Scott

Apparently you can try British Gas to train to be a Smart Energy engineer, just check their website as I guess it also depends where they're needed. We had a Smart meter installed last week and was told it involves 19 weeks training in Leeds, but at the end of it you get a Gas Safe certificate and some electrical training.
The work will be on-going until 2020 so enough work.
And - if you like working outdoors and are technically minded then there's plenty of contract work for mobile telecomm's, Carillion and Babcocks are two I know of, always work in that area but it helps if you know someone who works in that field.0 -

19 weeks and your gas safe registered? no doubt part p registered aswell disaster waiting to happen
remind never let anyone from british gas to work in my house
1st things 1st do your homework dont be sucked in by ads like become an electrician in 5 weeks and earn upto 50k a year its all bull
getting a trade is all about site work experience ie a spark, joiner plasterer try and find someone who will let you help them out even offer to work for free for 1 or 2 days a week to gain experience that you wont gain in a class room
look at what quals you get after the end of it and then ask a fully qualified person has got0 -
Brutus - I'm with you to a certain degree, 19 weeks of training doesn't seem much but considering it is for a certain upgrade and not fixing gas/boiler problems then surely it shouldn't be a big issue?
Don't shout at me though by the way, I'm only conveying my thoughts

whos shouting?
i just dont agree in someone only doing a short course and then let loose on the public and deemed competent on something as dangerous as electricity or gas
i spent 3 years day release and time on site serving an apprentiship and everyday is still a learning day0 -
