Courier work/tax help!

hi all

thinking of starting courier work with a leading co. but on a self-employed basis, so responsible for own tax, I already work 25 hours a week on PAYE and the courier work will be additional. Should I pay 'double' tax or will it be kept separate, ie. tax as paye and then tax as self-employed

also are there any other benefits, the man was saying about claiming for phone/petrol, etc. (didn't want to appear completely clueless)!

would appreciate any views/help or experiences

thanks

Your accountant should be the first port of call for what expenses you can offset against the self employed income.

It has been a long time since I ran my own company as well as being an employee. If I remember correctly and things havent changed your PAYE will come out/ off first and then you tax your self employed earnings from where your PAYE ones end. So if you salaried work was £20k and your self employed earnings were £10k you would just tax the £10k at normal rate as you have had your low rate/ exempt allowance catered for by PAYE but with the two combined you havent moved up into the higher rate
