The Invisible Loan!

Hi,

Here's one to exercise your brainbox.

I took a loan out with Barclaycard about four years ago and have been paying by direct debit ever since. It struck me a couple of days ago that I haven't received any statements from them for a good while, probably a couple of years.

I can't remember the exact date I started the loan or, more crucially, how long I have got left to pay on it so I thought I would phone up Barclays with my reference number and get the balance and an end date etc.

As I said, I haven't had a statement off them for a good while so I took the reference off the direct debit transaction on my bank account, it saying "account number 4*******" (the stars are real number, obviously). Barclays say they don't recognise this number.

They then did a search on my name and three previous address and found only one account, which was a long-closed Barclaycard. They asked me to check with my bank to see if they could provide any more details of where this direct debit payment was heading. The bank gave me a direct debit originator ID and an address (not Barclays) and phone number (out of service).

I have checked my Experian credit report and this loan does not appear on there. Every other credit agreement I have had, current and settled, are on there except this one.

It appears that this loan never actually took place. Except for the fact that I received the money at the start and have been paying monthly ever since of course.

Does anyone know how I can find out who this loan is with, what my account number is and how many payments I've got left to make?

I am half-tempted to cancel the direct debit and wait to see who contacts me!

Any sensible ideas will be gratefully received,

Simon

  • do you bank online and if so can you look at your account history?
i`m with you on cancelling the dd,and seeing what happens, but they may not have your current address?
  • Hi,

Yes I bank online but can only go back six or twelve months into history (can't remember which).

The only thing I can think of is that the loan was branded as Barclaycard but the agreement was with a different lender hence Barclays can't find it. It should still show up on my credit file though.

Maybe Barclays purged all their records to prevent PPI claims!!!

Have you also checked your credit files with equifax and callcredit?

It might show up on one of those?

Can you check back 4years ago on your statements to see the money being paid into your current account and to see if any information was provided then?

Do you have your original agreement or a statement from the first year or 2 of the loan?

  • I have just found an old statement! It has two account numbers on it, the old one and a new one that I didn't have before. That doesn't explain why Barclays can't find me but it gives them something else to look for.

    Thanks everyone.

I can't see Barclaycard handing a loan to any company other than Barclays - they'd be giving custom to a competitor.
