Self assessment help

Hi, my fiance has been asked to file a self assessment form, but the year 2010-2011 he didn't do any self employed work?
We are a little confused as to why he has received this request and how can he fill out the form when he hasn't done anything?
Both of us have never had a request for this before?

Many people who submit self assessment returns do it for other reasons than being self employed!
Normally you get a letter in advance saying that you will need to complete a SA return, and this list the possible reasons.
I would phone and ask, but in the meantime has he extra income from sources such as renting or investment? Is he over 65? Is he a minister of religion? Is he getting untaxed bank interest?Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Here is the list from HMRC: see if any apply, if not phone and ask:

Thanks for the replies!
He is 22, no extra income in that year, neither this year either he is employed and on PAYE!
And nothing on that list from that link describes him!:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j

How strange. The deadline for 2011-12 is Jan. 31st: when did the request arrive? I think the only thing you can do is ask HMRC, who will be extremely busy for a while.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

He received it before christmas, i've been on and on at him to sort it out, he's waiting on a letter from them with a code so he can fill it in online, but as we not sure what the form is for etc i dont know if he should be filling it out?
I know if he doesn't he's get a fine though, but there is nothing he can fill in as the only work he did was 2 days training for a job he didn't start, but that was paye:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j

Dont panic.
He can just fill in the details from his P60 re his earnings and all the rest of the questions will be irrelevant.0 -
i dont know if he should be filling it out?
If he's received a Notice to File - then it isn't an option unless you want Penalties. If he's purely PAYE then the basic details from the P60 are mainly what is needed but Interest must also be entered. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
All he did was those 2 days so is that all he puts down?:jEngaged 25/12/11 :j

Was he unemployed/on benefits then? JSA I believe is taxable, but only if your total income is over £7475.
That might explain it.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Any income / interest for 10-11. Also any taxable benefits such as JSA.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
