i just made a huge amount of chilli to freeze is portions. when i have frozen it before i just whack it in a bag and freeze. then when i take it out and cook, it looks quite a small amount. when i get it on the potato or rice, the portion always seems too big. i was organised this morning and put what i thought was a portion in an empty bowl and weighed it so they could all be about the same. it turns out it's about 225g-235g ish. as i want to have less waste and loose some weight, anybody know if that is a fair size. i want to add that is has been bulked out with green lentils too and is extra lean mince.

any advise about this size? i know it depends on appetite and things, but some comparison with others would be nice, thanks.

I've never weighed a portion of our food - may try that. I tend to count out spoonfuls when serving up then do same number into freezer bags and label according to no of portions in the bag. I must admit when i freeze it i always think it looks too small for a portion but haven't gone hungry once they are used. A frozen meal tends to be around 400g but includes the rice so i would say your portion size sounds about spot on as you would have approx 75g dry weight of rice with it and it approx doubles in size and i assume weight.

I've just weighed one of the portions of chilli I have in my freezer, and it's 252g, so yours seem similar.

Many of the pound shops sell plastic takeaway food containers, that will give you a clue to portion size.
You can freeze them too and if you really wanna be a saver, pop the frozen meal out of them once they are frozen, put it in a bag and back into the freezer,
Wash the container and it is ready to reuse.

I always use the plastic take-away style boxes (the shallower ones for a single portion) to freeze food in - I freeze the tubs half full of rice/pasta/mash etc and half with chille/casserole/etc (split down the middle) I find that it sometimes looks a small portion (others often say it looks like too little!) but it's always filling for me!

I freeze leftovers in my silicon muffin mould and then pop them into a freezer bag. I "disc" of chilli/spag bol/ curry is ample for a baked potato - and if I am doing a main meal for me and DS1 (who eats an adult sized portion anyway) I defrost three discs and do rice/noodles/pasta or veggies to go with it.

I measured and the moulds hold 200ml - or about an American cup measurement.

    Seems to work for us.
