Great advice above. I agree so much with making sweet things yourself to save money, that's what I plan to do this year - as soon as I add this sort of stuff to my shopping, the bill goes through the roof! I try to only buy ingredients that will make things, rather than pre done stuff.
Just discovered the 'make your own butter' thread on here which I'm loving. Find discounted double cream, put it in a pot where you have 2/3's empty space and shake like there's no tomorrow! After a while it will form butter and the watery bit is buttermilk which is great for pancakes, scones, muffins etc. The butter is really lovely too.
Take advantage of trials, I saw someone on here had soapnuts on trial. Freecycle is amazing as mentioned before.
