radio station now says that i haven't won :(

I entered a radio station competition online, and my name was showing on their website as a winner. I emailed the radio station, and asked them to confirm that I was the winner. They contacted me via email, and confirmed that I was the winner, and confirmed which prize I had won. They also stated that they had passed my details on to their prize department, as they would be the ones sending me my prize.
I was contacted 2 weeks later by email from the radio station, and they said that they had made a mistake, and i was not the prize winner.
Are they legally entitled to not give me the prize, even though they originally said that i was the winner?

Many thanks in advanced

I had a similar situation happen with me recently and i didn't get the prize as it was down to 'human error' :( . deffo worth emailing them saying you are getting in touch with the IPM (this may give them a kick up the backside) and email complaints@theipm.org.uk. if anyone can get you your prize these are the guys to do it! x

Thats disgusting behaviour. I would NOT let this go.....e-mail them and state that you are not gonna let this rest...to get your hopes up...then be brought down again...not very professional at all! Good Luck.

Which radio station is it? At least one of them (a Birmingham one maybe) is only open to people within it's broadcast area, and states if a winner from outside is drawn they will be disqualified. Just wondering whether it's something like this. If not, and they've just wrongly informed you, hopefully they'll at least be able to sort out a consolation prize.

Surely if you heard the competition, even if via digital tv or live internet streaming , then you are in their broadcast area.

You'd think so, but some of them specify that you must live "in the Radio Station's analogue FM broadcast area" eg:

    That's a bit mean.
