Rant about rude boss!

This is more of a rant as I don't believe I can do anything but I wanted to get this off my chest!

I work in retail, a very busy large store. My boss doesn't seem to be able to keep his emotions in check. If he is having a bad day he takes it out on the staff. Maybe I have been lucky with my previous jobs and it happens almost everywhere but I feel it is unacceptable.

A recent example - A colleague accepted a return which should have been refused. Fair enough she did something wrong but she didn't do it deliberately. While she was serving another customer the manager walked up to her with his voice raised and started telling her off. It was such a rude thing to do even the customers who were being served commented on how bad he handled the situation.

This happened to me a while ago and I just feel it is incredibly unfair. He wouldn't expect his employees to be rude in front of customers and yet he gets away with it!

Does anyone else have any experience of rude bosses? Have you done anything about it, eg reported them to anyone or is it just something I have to accept?

Thank you

The only person you could report it to would be his line manager. But I'd think very carefully if you have been employed there for less than 20 months, as you may be considered a troublemaker and after 1 April 2012, you could be dismissed without reason if you have less than 2 years service.

If it's his own business, well....

  • I work in retail too and have seen this a lot over the years. Speaking from personal experience when I had a run in with one such department manager, (she screamed at me and threw a sign at my head) it was taken seriously but then she was known to be a bully. I took out a grievance and she was reprimanded, details put on her personnel file and made to formally apologise to me. However our current Store Manager and Deputy Manager are both much like that themselves and while it is widely known in the company, absolutely nothing is done about it.

I find in retail especially there are two distinct sets of people, the Service types and the Trader types. While it is obviously a generalisation, in my experience 'Traders' tend to prioritise facts and figures over people's thoughts and feelings.

If your store has access to a Union it would be worth asking their advice so you know where you stand.
