In my quest to be more OS I stopped buying pre packed salad and now buy lettuce, cucumber etc and make my own. Today I found in my fridge still in it's plastic wrapping an iceburg lettuce bought from Lidl on DECEMBER 23rd (16 days ago) - it is fine, in fact perfect so we are having it tonight with chilli - what have they done to our food to make things stay fresh for so long? Should we be worried or is this unusual and I've just been lucky that it hasn't turned to mush?;)

icebergs are nown for their longevity, hence their popularity in supermarkets.
As long as they are not wet inside the wrapping (could rot) they should be fine for weeks. Helps if you break off leaves to use or cut with a plastic knife - metal causes browning (oxidisation) of the cut edges which is not harmful but looks unpleasant0 -
Agreed, my mum keeps her lettuce in a big old steel saucepan in a cold kitchen, and just breaks off a couple of leaves at a time and it lasts weeks.0

iceberg does last ages - I just break off leaves as required. Unfortunately, iceberg is a very boring lettuce! it doesnt taste of anything! so I just use it where a bit of crunch is required! or mix it with other more tasteful leaves.0
