What age to get my little girl spayed?

Hello all
Reading my daft questions anyone would think I have never owned a dog! Thing is I have always had big dogs, usually the most dopey looking mongrels you could imagine and the best companians ever!
We have an almost 3 year old boy, he is not neutered and it's not really something I am thinking about, he is a small JRT x Yorkie, is never let out on his own and never off lead, we use the long extending leads so he can have a run in the field.
We have just got our little girl, she is Chihuahua cross JRT but her Mam is 3/4 chihuahua and her dad a tiny pedigree chihuahua, she is very small. I really want to get her spayed as soon as possible but not sure when this is, do I have to wait until she has had a season or is this an old wives tale? Thanks for any advice

Your vet will be able to advise when she goes for her jabs - it's usually around the 6 month mark before you can get them done, but it can also depend on weight.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250

i would like to know this answer as well .
i have a new kitten coming this week who is 13 weeks old and i want to get him done asap
one of the kittens i looked at from another breeder was going to be done at 13 weeks.
i thought that sounds a bit too young0 -
As per post 2 .... your vet will be able to advise.
Sorry not trying to be difficult - but different vets have different *rules* on when they'll do the op so only the vets at the practice you're going to use will be able to give a definitive answer.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Thank you
Will bring it up with the vet when she goes for her jabs, didn't realise it could depend on weight too. I will probably be back with some more daft questions as they arise0 -
I asked my vet about this yesterday and I was told once my lab x was fully 6 months old they recommended it be done. I asked if she needed to have her first season and was told a definate no. They will also micro chip her at the same time at a reduced cost. I do think all vets vary so it would be best to ask your own vet.0

Thanks mamamags, I am actually scared for her getting the op as she is so small but even if I got the boy neutered there is no guarantee she won't be caught by accident by another dog and there is no way on earth I want to put her through pregnancy.0 -
My vet was 6 months before her first season. As he said why put her through a season. She was fine:rotfl: l love this site!! :rotfl:0

She should be spayed AFTER the completion of her 1st period of "on heat" ie: at the completion of her 1st menstrual cycle. If you have her "done" before that, she will suffer all her life with phantom pregnancies which is not nice for her or you. This could be up to 6 months of age but it varies with breed and each animal. Always discuss anything you are not sure about with your vet.0

Mine were both spayed at 10/11 months old.
Next door left their b!tch till after she was 1 and got caught out as she mated with the dog in the house. They ended up having to spay and abort 3 puppies.
You say you're worried about her size - dont forget that vets also neuter smaller animals. I had to get my netherland dwarf bunnies done and theyre teeny!XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:wave:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX0 -

This is my first dog and I have to say the thought of her having surgery scares me but it's preferable to her having seasons and every dog in the neighbourhood coming calling at all hours of the day and night!:rotfl: Vet told me there were health benefits to her being spayed too so she will be done at 6 months - have already planned ahead and will take time off work after the surgery - as far as I'm aware she will go in to the vet in the morning and I will collect her at night once the op is done.
Your girl sounds tiny. My friend has a mini yorkie - huge character but so small I'm always scared I'm going to stand on her!0
