FTB Mortgage slightly poor credit

Hey all, I'm new here, been lurking in the backgroud for a while now, haha.
Anyways found out I need to move out by May, now I've fortuatly have about 7 grand coming my way before the 1st March and I want to buy a house instead of renting (don't like the idea of lining someone elses pocket if I can avoid it). I'm looking to buy a house/flat at about 50-60k top end but I'm having trouble with mortgages. I'm currently on 24k a year plus bonus of approx 2k. I have missed one payment on 3 accounts, the latest last Aug 2011. I have now 6 credit searches in the last 6 months (though 3 of the were in Jun/July). I do have a loan on a car at the moment monthly payents of 272 and 3 years left and about 2500 on credit cards.
I'm a bit sort of time and don't want to do any more credit searches then I have to, the 2 mortgage advisors I've seen/talked to have been incredibly unhelpful so just wondering what people would advise?
