in Cutting tax
Hi, I have an ongoing issue that I have been trying to deal with for months now, and I'm still getting nowhere !
Last year I kept getting lots of different tax codes sent through the post, even though my current situation hadn't changed in years.
The Inland Revenue are trying to say that I owe them around £2500 in underpaid tax from the years 2006/7 regarding company vehicles, and I have now been on an emergency tax code since April 2011 as a result.
I have made lots of phone calls, and had promise after promise that this will be resolved, but I'm still no further forward to this day.
The paperwork they sent contradicts itself, stating that I was driving both a company van AND a company car at the same time during one previous employment, and also that I had a company car during another brief employment - which I did not.
As a result, they have taxed me on having the company van, and the fuel benefit for a van, PLUS taxed me on having a company car, and fuel allowance for the car.... And if that wasn't enough, they've also taxed me on having another company car during another year that I was using my own personal car to travel to and from work !!
After pointing out to various Inland Revenue representatives that I would need to be EXTREMELY talented to be able to drive a company car AND a van at the same time, they admited there was an error, and would amend their records, and my tax coding respectively.
Instead, all i keep on getting is completely random letters 2 weeks later after the phone calls stating things such as.... " This is who you worked for in 200x" ..... which isn't even relative to our discussions over the phone !!
I don't know where to turn anymore, as I just can't seem to get this resolved at all. I've even provided them with payslips, P60's AND P11D's to show all my previous vehicles/ employment benefits.
As you can understand, I am now EXTREMELY frustrated after being on an emergency tax code for almost 10 months, and would REALLY like to get this resolved once and for all !!
Any advice would be GRATEFULLY received !
Thanks !!

Emergency Code doesn't act to collect underpayments - it actually gives full personal allowances - but on a non cumulative basis (normally). So what Code are you on?
And what is on the P11Ds from your employer? As that is where HMRC get info on regarding benefits in kind such as car provision. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
