Making coloured buttercream

I posted last week regarding me making my sons 4th birthday cake. The cakes out the oven and its so far so good. Now for the tricky part green buttercream. Ive made buttercream before but mainly chocolate and have never used food colouring to colour it. Is it please just a matter of adding a tony amount to the butter then mixing it into the butter before adding the icing sugar?
Thanks in advance

Hi
if it is liquid food colouring then what I do is dip a cocktail stick or very thin skewer into the food colouring then stir this into the buttercream, then keep mixing really well with a spoon till the colour is even, repeat the process as many times as nessaccary to get the colour you want you really only need a tiny amount at a time,1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480

Make the buttercream first. Once you're happy with the consistency and flavour, start adding the food colouring. Just add a drop or two at a time until you reach the colour you want.0

sorry I make the buttercream up plain first and add the colouring to that if you add it to the butter first then the icing sugar will lighten the colour when you add it so best to make the buttercream icing up plain then add any colourings direct:)1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480
