Are electric cookers any good for baking?

Options
The oven thermostat on my cooker has died and we have been quoted £160 to fix it. As the cooker is 10yr old, I am wondering if we may as well just replace it altogether.
Only problem is..... gas cookers seem to be a lot more expensive than gas, but as I bake a lot, I am not sure whether I would get on with an electric.
My sister's last 2 cookers have been electric, and things either get burnt, or take forever.
Any suggestions/ advice much appreciated.

I bake in an electric oven and I've never had an issue. I used Gas before but we're not allowed it in the flats where we live.

It just takes a lttle bit of time to get used to. :D

Ive never used a gas cooker in me life and never had a problem with electric.

Remember fan ovens cook quicker though

And also remember that gas is cheaper than electric so if youre used to gas I would stick with it. TBH
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I preferred the gas oven at my old house but now my new house has an electric one...it's ok, but it took me quite a lot of attempts to get baking right. When we redo the kitchen I think I'll go with gas again.

I use electric an dhave no problems mine is a fan oven so you do need to be aware to adjust cooking times and temperatures a bit but once you are used to it it should be fine.

Thanks for all the input. Looking at the prices, for the cost of the repair (around £160), I would only be able to afford the cheapest of cheap electric cookers for the same price.

I had an electric oven before we had the kitchen done. I now have gas and I HATE it. I can't seem to get a constant temp. Everything either comes out burnt or raw! I would love to go back to electric.

I've used both and I prefer elecric for baking and gas for the hob (which is what I have now).

The oven might not be the main concern though. If you're used to a gas hob, you will find it very difficult to adjust to an electric one. With gas, everything is instant, but an electric hob takes a while to heat up and cool down again, so if you turn the heat down for example it will take a while to catch up. I absolutely can't stand elecric hobs to the point that when we hopefully buy a house later this year, if there was any reason we couldn't have gas I wouldn't even consider buying the property.

I've had both gas and electric and I'd NEVER have an electric hob again (difficult to clean, scratches easily, barely heats...generally a pain) but didn't have any problems with the electric oven. Then again, I've never had any problems with a gas one!

I agree, that's what I have,:D a gas hob and an electric fan oven. I do plenty of baking and it's fine. But I wouldn't swap my gas hob for electric if you paid me.

Same with me!!! Thanks guys..... you've definitely helped me make up my mind. I wouldn't mind electric oven I suppose, but I would do anything not to have an electric hob!!! I hate having to put it on for 5 or 10 mins before you can even cook on it, takes ages to cool down too, and you can't even tell if it's on unless it is one of those red-glowing jobs!
Yeah, I will be ringing the repair people on Monday first thing. It's a very reliable local firm which everyone recommends, so should be okay.
I will now have a hunt around to find out the nice way to ask to get a bit off the price!!! I'm sure Martin would never agree with the price quoted without at least trying, so I should give it a go....YIKES!
