Went to the Drs yesterday and he like all the others told me I really should find another job due to my knee/s. I had an accident at work 3 years ago and the injury is'nt resolved yet. His opinion is that my knee/s arn't going to last another 5 years doing what I'm doing.
I'm not sure where to go to find information on retraining for other employment. Can anyone give me some ideas as where to start?

I'm not sure what type of advice you are looking for...Have you got any ideas on what you'd like to do? Some jobs may have entry routes which you don't need a qualification for, so you might be able to start on the ladder that way - others will require qualifications, so you'll need to go to college or university. If you don't have a level 3 course, most places will offer some financial assistance, although there isn't a great deal about. Some industries have apprenticeships, so you can work while studying, but these are generally minimum wage which could be a problem if you are earning more then that now. University offers loans and grants, but you'll need to apply quickly to get in next year, and if you've already got a degree you won't be entitled to the help, and will have to pay higher fees.
There isn't any specific help for your situation which I am aware of, and with the job market the way that it is, you might find it difficult to transfer to a different industry just like that. Would it be possible for you to speak to your manager and enquire about positions within the company which may be suitable? This would help you to build experience, and will boost your chances as your bosses know you.0 -
What do you do at the moment? Does that have any transferable skills to another "sitting down" career that would sugest retraining in that direction?0

I'm a postie so really not many transferable skills there. Not sure what else I can to do as I've done this job since 1988, probably why 'the knees' are in the state they are in now. Only qualifications I have are typing/office skills but they are well out of date now obviously due to technology. Eventually I would like to do something in Probate research, so will need the qualifications.0

You might find it helpful to see a careers advisor type person. The careers advice centre attched to your local uni may be willing to help out. They should help you find ways to research your interest area, find out what skills you would like to use etc. Its not all about the job title, its about what the job involves, research, organising, communications etc..
Good luck

Contact Next Step for careers & training advice. Transferable skills could include motivation, time management, route planning, customer service, depending on your route, could also include driving (safe, fuel efficient etc.).0
