I was very lucky to find a measuring jug in a charity shop. It gives cups, half cups. etc. I also have a set of cups I use.

I find American cake recipes are very liquid, they refer to the cake mix as 'batter', not always successful for me.
  • I like both systems myself, I prefer cups measurements for somethings, such as flour and sugar, but it completely elludes me how to measure other things, such as butter or cheese, using the cups system, without adding an unnecessary step such as melting or grating so I tend to convert these types of items to their weight value as often as possible.
  • I always forget how much a cup is so tend to use google's convertor. Just type "1 cup in ml" and voila! :D

Despite being older than thriftlady ;) I prefer metric measurements, and didn't buy a set of imperial weights when I bought my new scales. I think it's because I'm better with my 10 times table than my 8 times :j And I've never got to grips with cups :p

My now deceased BM came with a measuring thingy that has the cups marked on it. Have kept it for those recipes which use them as have found it a lot easier than trying to convert it [I hasten to add I am a lazy mare!]

As I understand it the previous postings are all correct BUT Canadian cup measures (I use recipes from my aunt in Canada and purchased my first set of measures there) are 1 cup is 250ml . I too prefer to weigh and measure either in metric or in cups.... in spite of my age!

And this is why it's all such a mess:rotfl: Yes Canadian measures are metric, unlike USA which are imperial, but not the same as ours:rolleyes: I'll happily use any, but of course know your source and don't mix and match the various systems.;)

Where I do agree is with Soozy, when I look at a recipe that says e.g 2 cups of walnuts, it is hard to think what weight you'll need to buy:confused:

How many cups of flour do I need to make up roughly 350g? I want to make a pizza, but the battery in my scales has gone, and I am stuck at home with a child who has a dodgy tummy!

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Thanks: I reckon I'll start with three cups and then add a bit more as needed.

It's a long time since I made pizza but I have good salami left over from christmas, heaps of mozzarella and the time. What is there to lose!
