Promotion when on long term sick leave?

So here's the background, started with my employer at the end of February last year (2011 just to be clear). July/August time my work load greatly increased and i posted on here about how to approach the issue. October 2011 I signed off work to have a heart transplant, expected return date is March but as I'm not out of hospital yet that might not happen.
One of the managers is leaving to have a baby, she doesn't expect to return but due to legislation her position won't be filled until after her maternity leave. An assistant manager has been offered her role and my manager visited me today to offer me the chance to apply for the AM role.
Obviously he hasn't discounted me for being off sick and I am good at what I do. He said I can be interviewed in the hospital as a "reasonable adjustment" but he is using an external company to do the actual interviewing/gap filling so what do you think my chances are? I don't really want to go to the stress of being interviewed if my position would automatically exclude me from being properly considered.

March isn't so far away. Interviews aren't that stressful if you're ok if you don't get the job. what do you have to lose again?Debt free 4th April 2007.

The interview will be in the next week or so. Although I'm not due back until March the manager leaves at the start of feb so the store would be without an AM for a month or longer.0

I'd say no-one can tell you what your chances are, as no-one knows if you're any good at your job, and no-one can second guess whether your manager is just being 'nice' (which is what I suspect you're asking).
He hasn't discounted you, and is offering you the chance to go for it. They didn't have to bother to do that at all, so I don't see why they wouldn't be genuine. If you want it, then have the interview. But if you feel that the interview would be too stressful then don't, regardless of your chances.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
well if they ended up with an external hire they could be on 3 months notice. I'm not saying go for it, I'm just saying be sure you are rejecting it for the right reasons if that is what you are going to do.

No reason not to go for the job unless you don't want it.
Any issue with the timing is their issue, they know the time scales so if they pressure you in an interview on those you terminate it, on skills you can hold your own.0
