I do agree you have to take some responsibility but feel that some responses are a bit harsh.
You should really have noticed after one, maybe give the benefit of the doubt and say two payments had not left your account.
However if you had ever missed a payment before and the only reason the payment didn't come out was because the account details had changed, I do think Tesco should also take some responsibility for not contacting you depending on if they made a significant effort.

Did you have any other contact details e.g. Email, mobile phone that was still valid. Why did they have your old address, did you contact them when moving.

I would say that Tesco should take the debt back and they probably will if you contact them rather than the debt collection company, therefore just pay the original debt again and any charges written off. Removing the default may be more difficult though, as if not their fault banks are reluctant to change these if accurate.

I agree that i would have expected Tesco to have tired all means of contact but i honestly couldn't see them taking the debt back. They've had no payments for 6 months! Why should they write off the charges??? But as Tixy said if you could prove you told them your new details then you are in a better position.

wow some really harsh responses no need for it, things could be explained to the poster without being quite so aggressive/nasty about it.

Op I had the exact same problem, I noticed it after 2 months and rang them right away and paid with my debit card, thought it was all sorted and the exact same thing happend again, paid with my card waited for the next month to come along, low and behold exact thing happend again so I put a complaint in.

I got a written apology and a £25 Tesco giftcard (better than a slap in the face I suppose) they said that Tesco were transferring systems and the sort code changed and they were having problems with the direct debits and that it wasnt just me affected, they said they couldnt remove the default on my credit file which im still miffed about but I didnt persue it because I knew they would budge even though it was there fault.

After 'only' 6 months its quite possible that the debt hasn't yet been sold on but has just been passed to a debt collector to chase on tesco's behalf.

Thankyou all for your responses. I now know not to trust the DD system to take out the money but to keep an eye on it. Little did I realise how quickly a credit rating can go fom good to bad without knowing about it. I will contact the debt agency today and find out what I need to do and whether the loan has been sold to them or that they are just chasing it? Luckily I am not looking to take out a loan or get a new credit card so I should hopefully have a couple of years to get my credit rating back up to a good position.
  • If Tesco really wanted to contact her that badly, couldn't they have written a letter to her addressed c/o her bank? As they knew the bank name, address and sort number.

They probably could have done - but that simply never happens, would not be worth the time and effort and would be totally impractial for a company that size.
If tesco had no record of her moving address (whoever's fault that was) then how would they distinguish this one customer from the thousands who default on their accounts and ignore any letters sent to them in the post. Its a customer's responsibility to pay their account in accordance with the T&Cs, not a creditors responsiblity to try to find out why each individual defaulted customer is not paying.

I can't see why Tesco would need to contact you if they change their account number. The payment is taken by DD and will be paid into whatever account the originator specifies, it's got nothing to do with the person who has taken out the loan. This would only be necessary if the payment is by standing order.
