Tax from a student competition prize

Hi
I am a student of architecture is the state of California and has both been granted scholarship money and won competition money.
My question is: How do I know if I need to pay taxes for either?
The scholarship money I am somewhat certain of but I am very uncertain as to whether or not I am tax liable for my competition prizes. They have all been money issued from either AIA (American Institute of Architects) or the firms who had stood behind the competition.
I would appreciate any help as I am a starving student in a struggling profession. Thank you.

Addition to previous: Scholarship money came from private donors issued on checks.0

This is a mainly UK site, you'd be better finding a US equivalent to ask your question as the number of people on here with detailed knowledge of US/California tax law will be pretty small.0

Try asking on fatwallet.com it's the nearest thing the USA has to this site.
Have you asked at your college though ? They would deal with questions like this on a regular basis and should either know....or know who to send you to -to find out.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
