Paid Tax for Someone Else

in Cutting tax
Earlier this year I worked on a casual basis for an establishment. I stopped getting shifts in March, but never received a P45 or P60.
A few weeks ago, I was asked to go back and my first pay pack, said I'd earned £145 this tax year, when in fact I had earned about £40. It turns out, my tax code had been used by someone else who took the earnings but I paid the tax for them!
My work place hasn't told me what's going to happen so does anyone know if I need to do anything like tell the tax man? I know it's not a huge amount, but as I'm also self employed, I get hit enough with tax.

Your 'tax code' doesn't identify you. Millions of us share the same Code. It's your NI number / payroll reference that identifies you.
as it's in this tax year then just get payroll to correct it - then HMRC doesn't come into the equation. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Thank you. I'll try and nail down the payroll guy at work. It was all put through against my employee number and NI number tooThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

That's the critical bit they need to correct. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
It sounds as though the payroll department have processed someone else's pay using your employee records. I have seen this done once or twice before by shady/incompetent small companies.
Just get them to correct it... you haven't exactly paid tax for someone else, but its still wrong.
It won't affect you at all taxwise but does increase your income by £105 for tax credit/csa purposes etc etc ...
And if they are, for example, employing an illegal worker, on your employee details it is worrying...
For such a small amount sounds more like incompetence rather than anyhting else though imho!:beer:0
