Basic advice needed

Hi all,
I am 40 years old and have an under performing Aviva mortgage endowment maturing in 8 years (well, I've had a couple 'red' letters). I also have two small part pensions due to company takeovers/changing jobs, and am being asked if I want to join my new companies scheme. I'm ashamed to admit I really don't understand endowments and pensions, and what you're allowed to do with them. I'm on quite a low wage, and really need some financial advice to make the most of my money. How do I go about getting this, and what should I expect to be paying.
