Self Assessment or Not ?

After an appalling experience with HMRC (still ongoing) - I am considering registering for Self Assessment - in order that I can at least make sure that I am paying the correct Income Tax - the "complexity" of two pensions from different sources appears way to difficult for the taxman to grasp !!
Is there any reason why this should cause any problems ?
What are the implications of my registering ?

As your pensions will be taxed under PAYE it will just over complicate the situation. Are you a higher rate taxpayer or over 65 and receiving more than £22k pa, if not then the tax payable should be easily sorted via PAYE. My tax, and that of many thousand others, works fine.0

It shouldn't be. What's causing the problem? Is there any reason why this should cause any problems ?

To register you will need your UTR which you will not have if you have never filled in a tax return. As your circumstances don't seem to warrant needing a tax return you may have difficulty registering.
Apart from that it's fairly straightforward to complete.0 -

The problem is that I have 2 pensions from 2 different employers - which HMRC have given me two seperate Tax Offices to deal with, neither communicate with the other !!
On top of this - a 3rd tax office deals with tax on a part time job - plus last year, I was on benefits (4th tax office) - they are supposed to be "as one" - but this is not the case
I am fed up of being given the run around by HMRC - when I owe them money - they harass me with mail - but when they owe me - it is a different story - they currently owe me several hundreds from last TY - And trying to get them to pay up is nigh on impossible - hence this question0 -

It all should be straightforward if at least one of the incomes is more than the personal allowance. Where problems arise is where it's small incomes.I am fed up of being given the run around by HMRC - when I owe them money - they harass me with mail - but when they owe me - it is a different story - they currently owe me several hundreds from last TY - And trying to get them to pay up is nigh on impossible - hence this question
You can always ask if you can use self assessment but you might not get anywhere with that either.0 -

As - from 2 years ago - you have a single PAYE account I can't see why there would be that variability.
And in what manner do you think SA would resolve it? You will still have to pay tax via all the PAYE sources. then summarise it all several months later on an extra layer called SA. I see no gain whatsoever. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
My mother had three pensions and investment income and had to complete a short tax return each year - it wasn't difficult and reassured her that her tax affairs were in order.
There is a section on the form for employment and self employment income for those who need to complete them.0 -

At the moment - I am still owed over £230 from last tax year - as a result of overpaying income tax and a boo boo with DWP sending the tax office two "tickets" for ESA - which I have proved incorrect - I have written proof of my income last TY - But HMRC appear oblivious to this !!
Hence - I would gain knowledge that I am paying the correct tax - simple !!0 -
