Tax code help

Read through the various sticky threads and such but still needing a bit of help.

I am 24 years old and in full-time employment with McDonald's UK however, I think my tax code is wrong.
I am on a tax code 'OT' I have never encountered this before, nor can I seem to find a proper reason for me being on it?

From March until July I worked for Roadchef UK in one of their McDonald's franchises, however I was technically employed by roadchef. In August I started working for a McDonald's owned restaurant so therefore changed employers, I filled out all the relevant forms and whatnot but my tax code is still incorrect.
I get paid every fortnight (Thursday) and in a two week pay period I can be taxed between £70-100 depending on hours worked. It's causing me great stress if I'm honest.

Can someone please help?
Any time I try contacting IR/HMRC I get put on hold for ages and I only have 100 minutes on my phone tariff.

Thanks
Colin

On that Code you will be paying 20% on everything - with no personal allowance. Normal reason is that you didn't provide a P45 on starting / didn't then complete a P46 / or completed it without filling in Section 1.

Very recent similar thread here :

    - see if your pay people will accept a belated P46. But you really should persevere with HMRC as the P46 will put you on a non cumulative code. Less tax than currently but it won't recover the refund you're owed. Why no P45? As that's where it goes wrong

  • Right!
That is bloody annoying tbh. I filled out all the normal stuff; P46 and whatnot.
I've got a P45 here from my time at Roadchef, can I use that?

what's the best way to contact HMRC to get back owed tax overpayment? And what stuff will I need?

    Thanks

give your new employer your P45 (assuming the details are correct)
once they apply this you will have your excess tax repaid through the payroll system
  • I received the P45 a little while ago, will that be an issue?

    Shouldn't be - provided it's for 2011-12.

But why hang on to it? As that's what's caused the problem and the excessive tax deductions.

I assume the P45 is the one from roadchef

Mcdonalds should be able to use the P45 to update your payroll file i.e. the tax code and the totals to date (when you left roadchef)
