self-Employed, Solvent, but imposible to get credit

Hi,
I'm looking for a bit of advice or help.
I've been self-employed for nearly 8 years now, i am solvent and have over 40k running through my current account annualy.
But still i cannot even get the likes of a store card, overdraft or credit card.
My bank has told me that it seems unreasonable that i'm not offered an overdraft or credit card, they told me to appeal to head office which i did but was rejected. my bank manager told me his hands were tied as its a decision made by the computer. He then advised me to get a store card to try and build up a credit history. Unfortunatly, i said, i cannot get any sort of credit because of my self employed status.
I can only get a 50% mortgage, which makes it almost impossible to buy a family home.
Has anyone got any ideas how I can get some sort of credit so i can build up a credit history.
Thanks in advance for any advice
Tris

Who has told you you can only get a 50% mortgage? If you can prove your income (net profits) then it's straight forward

Have you checked copies of your credit files with each of the 3 credit reference agencies? If not then get copies of them to see what they show. Are you financially associated with anyone else (partner/spouse etc) and if so do they have any credit problems that you are aware of?

Have you actually tried applying for a sub prime credit card?

That really means very little unfortunately.

That sounds like a turnover figure and gives no clue as to how much you make.

Have you presented your bank manager with a set of audited accounts?

Its not to do with being self employed that's for sure.
