Sickness

I have seen a few topic's around sickness recently and I had what I would call an 'odd' situation with my partner and her work recently.

On christmas eve we both fell ill with a 24 hour D&V type bug. My patner was at work during the day and started vomiting while she was at work however her manager refused to send her home.

Can an employer refuse to send some one home if they physically cant work?

I know she works in retail and it was one of the busiest days of the year however surely there is no sense in keeping some one in if they cant work?

Your partner is an adult and capable of saying "I am too ill to work" without having to be ordered home, yes?

Failing that I find passing out on the loo floor works well.

I've always found a vomit on the shop floor to be more effective :rotfl:

In the end she did send herself home but what I found interesting was she said to her boss (something along the lines of) "I feel sick can I go home (etc)" and they said no.... just sounded a bit odd to me

asking for permission versus telling. not the best of plans if your boss is a bit thick.

I have people come up to me regularly in work when they cba and say I don't feel well can I go home. Most of the time it is an out and out blag because they just don't want to be there so I tell them they can't if we are busy. The times where someone is obviously ill I ask them to go and if they throw up they are ordered to leave.
Perhaps the manager at the time didn't think she was really ill depending on the exchange and was very probably stressed to buggary at the time.

The old adage of "ask for forgiveness, not for permission" is so true in this instance. Of course if you ask the boss is going to say no.
